Madeira tours: five types compared

Most visitors can do Madeira on their own, but some days are easier with a guide or a driver. The five types below cover the main options: a guided levada walk, a sunrise trip to Pico do Arieiro, a jeep tour, a boat trip for whales and dolphins, and canyoning. This page does not list tour operators or tour prices. It helps you decide which type fits and what to look for in a description.

Since 1 January 2026 hiking changes the maths. Every official trail needs an online booking and costs €4.50 per person and trail. Visitors accompanied by a registered operator that has an agreement with the forest institute (IFCN) pay a reduced €3. That makes a guided walk less expensive in fees than it first looks, and it removes the booking work for you if the operator handles it. Ask which of the two applies.

Guided levada walks and sunrise at Pico do Arieiro

Where a guide matters most.

Levada walks with a guide

A guided walk suits the one-way routes. The Vereda do Fanal runs 10.8 km from Assobiadores to Fanal, and the PR1 ridge walk ends far from where it starts. Without a transfer you need a taxi or two cars. Fog is common at Fanal, and a local guide knows when to turn back.

Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro

Demand grew in 2026. Since 21 June there are two extra entry windows, 7:00 to 7:30 and 7:30 to 8:00, with 70 places each. The ridge walk costs €10.50 for the full crossing, or €7 with an operator that has an agreement with the forest institute. It is one-way from Pedra Rija towards Pico Ruivo.

Check the trail status

Trails can be restricted or closed at short notice. On 19 October 2026 the Ponta de São Lourenço trail (PR 8) and PR 1.3 were restricted, and five trails were closed. A reliable operator will tell you what happens if your trail closes.

Who should book a guide?

Madeira guided tours suit first-time walkers on levadas, anyone with a one-way route and no car, and people who are nervous about exposed paths with drops on one side. If you walk often and rent a car, a guide adds less.

Jeep tours, boats and canyoning

The tours that are not about trail fees.

Jeep tours

A jeep tour is the easy way to go sightseeing in Madeira, and it works as a Madeira island tour in a single day. It links viewpoints, villages and the high plateau. It can show more than a day of driving yourself, because the driver handles the steep, winding roads and you look out of the window. Read the description for the route, the number of stops and the pick-up point.

Madeira boat trips for whales and dolphins

A boat tour in Madeira runs all year from Funchal marina, Calheta, Machico and Caniçal, and Porto Santo. One operator listed two trips a day from November to April and three from May to October, lasting 2 hours 30 minutes on 18-seat inflatable boats with a skipper and a biologist. Others differ, so check current prices with the operator.

Whale watching →

Desertas trips

Some boat tours also go to the Desertas islands, where a colony of monk seals lives. These trips are longer than a standard whale trip, so check the duration and what is included.

Canyoning

Canyoning means abseiling, sliding and swimming down a stream with a guide. Check routes, seasons and operators for Madeira before you book. Ask about the guide's qualification, the equipment, the minimum age and the weather rule, and be honest about your swimming ability.

What to check before you book

The same points apply to every type of tour in Madeira.

What is included

Look for the transfer, the guide, entry fees and, for walks, the trail fee. Prices in the description can leave these out.

Weather and cancellation

Madeira's weather changes with altitude. The mountains can be foggy while the coast is sunny. Wind affects the airport and the sea. Look for a free cancellation or rebooking rule.

Weather and best time →

Fitness and age

Children up to 12 are exempt from the trail fee according to the official trail pages, but registration still applies. Operators set their own minimum ages for boats and canyoning.

Pick-up point

Check whether you are collected at your hotel or must reach a meeting point. In Funchal this matters less, in the north and west it matters a lot.

A Madeira island tour or on your own?

The honest trade-offs.

Pros of a tour

No driving on steep roads, a solution for one-way walks, a local who reads the weather and, on guided walks, a lower trail fee of €3.

Cons of a tour

A fixed day and pace. Popular sights get busy, and a cloudy morning is hard to avoid.

Pros of going alone

You choose the day and the time at each stop. With a rental car and the trail booked in advance it can cost less.

Cons of going alone

You book every trail slot yourself, drive the mountain roads and organise the way back from one-way routes.

Wine tour in Madeira: know the styles first

If you are looking for a wine tour in Madeira, it helps to know the styles before you read a description. From dry to sweet they are Sercial, Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia (also called Malmsey). The main growing areas are Câmara de Lobos and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, which grow Tinta Negra, Verdelho and some Boal, and São Vicente, which grows Tinta Negra and Verdelho.

Ask what the tour includes and which producers or tastings are part of it, as with any other tour. We do not quote tour prices here.

Madeira tours: frequently asked questions

Is a guided levada walk cheaper than going alone?

The trail fee is lower: €3 with a registered operator instead of €4.50 per person and trail. The tour price as a whole is usually higher than walking alone, but it includes the guide and may include the transfer.

Do I still need to book the trail with a guide?

Every visitor needs a reservation, whether alone, in a group or with a guide. Ask the operator whether they handle the booking for you.

Can I see whales all year?

Yes, trips run year-round. Commonly seen are common dolphins, spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales and pilot whales. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Is a sunrise tour at Pico do Arieiro worth it?

It is popular, and early slots were added in June 2026. Check the weather the evening before, because the summit can be in cloud while the coast is clear.

Do tour prices change?

Yes. Prices and availability change with the season, so we show live prices from the booking platform and do not quote tour prices here.
