Cabo Girão at a glance

Cabo Girão is a sea cliff on Madeira's south coast, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. A skywalk, a viewing platform with a glass floor, projects from the top and looks straight down to the sea. Many visitors stop here on a day trip from Funchal.

Entry has been charged for a few years and the price has risen every time. Since 1 January 2026 the skywalk costs €5. Older guides still print €3, €2 or "free", which is out of date. This independent guide lists what we could verify in October 2026. It is not the official tourism website.

Who pays and who enters free

Adults pay €5. Children up to 12 enter free, and so do residents of Madeira. People who live on the island but come from abroad must certify their residence through the regional SIMplifica portal to qualify for the free entry. Visitors on holiday pay the full fee. As an example, two adults with a child of 10 pay €10 in total, and a group of four adults pays €20.

Pay attention to the date on any price you read. The €3 fee dates from 2025, and the 2026 increase is the most recent change we found.

The Cabo Girão viewpoint, also known as Cape Girão

Some English guides write Cape Girão. The Cabo Girão viewpoint is the platform on top of the cliff, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. It has a glass floor, and solid ground around it for anyone who prefers to look from the edge.

The skywalk is the paid part of the viewpoint. The fee, who enters free and the price history are covered above and below.

How high is the Cabo Girão cliff?

The regional tourism site gives 580 metres. Some secondary sources say 589 metres. You will also read that this is the highest sea cliff in Europe. We could not verify that claim and treat it as marketing. The exact figure matters less than the view: from the platform you look almost straight down to the water.

The glass floor is part of the experience for some visitors and a problem for others. If you do not like heights, you can still enjoy the viewpoint from the solid ground around the platform.

Opening hours and parking

The two things to check before you go.

Opening hours

A secondary source lists 8:30 to 20:00, and until 19:00 in winter. We could not verify this officially, so check on site and do not plan around the last half hour.

Parking

Parking at the viewpoint is limited, according to a secondary source. Arrive early on busy days or go with a tour that includes the stop.

Weather

The coast can be sunny while the mountains are in cloud, and the reverse can also happen. Look at the sky in the morning before you commit, since cloud at the cliff hides the view down.

Safety

Stay behind the barriers, keep children close to you and avoid the platform in strong wind or storms.

Combine it with other stops

Cabo Girão fits into a day trip from Funchal. By itself the stop takes a short time, so most people pair it with another sight. You can pair it with the market in Funchal or with Monte. For a longer loop, continue west and visit the natural pools of Porto Moniz, which cost €3 in 2026.

Funchal is the usual base. Our Funchal page lists the market, the cable car and the Botanical Garden with 2026 prices. If you plan to drive, read the car rental page first, since the mountain roads are steep and narrow.

A day in the southwest

Three ways to shape your trip, with 2026 times and prices.

Half day from Funchal

Start with the skywalk at €5 and return to Funchal afterwards. The market is open until 19:00 from Monday to Friday, but only until 14:00 on Saturday.

Combine with the cable car

Go to Monte first, since the cable car runs daily from 8:45 to 17:45. Visit the skywalk in the afternoon or on another day.

Monte →

Full day towards Porto Moniz

According to a secondary source, Porto Moniz is about 60 kilometres from Funchal, 1.5 to 2 hours by car. The natural pools cost €3 and open 9:00 to 17:00 in winter and 9:00 to 19:00 in summer.
